Artists - Sol Maya
Sol Maya is a Canadian Citizen of Native American, Mayan ancestry. He first became involved in art at Santa Barbara City College where he studied ceramics, sculpting, printmaking and glass blowing. He loved the spontaneity of working with glass and decided to focus on glass blowing.
Sol’s art flows from a creative process by which he uses his imagination to create true original artwork… like his “Saturn Rings”. The creation of these rings introduces a whole new technique to the ancient glass blowing process. Sol has been working on this process since 1984 and wishes it to be his contribution to Glass Art. To the best of his knowledge, since the inception of hand blown glass no one has ever worked glass in this way …. while still maintaining traditional techniques… truly a new dimension in hand blown glass!
Sol’s glass art reacts amazingly with the light. He believes the life-giving light of Father Sun puts the spirit into the glass, bending light, creating intricate reflections and creating energy forces in their centre. Light energy brings life to the glass. He hopes that you will feel what he feels.
Sol works from his two studios, Spirit of Fire in Tofino, B.C. – and Klee Wyck in West Vancouver.
Quails’ Tale
Every piece is made (blown) by hand - Sol does not use molds, so that each piece he makes is unique. He also uses various glass "recipes" to get the finish he desires - he does not use chemicals or added glazes to produce the end result.
We are very honored to be able to feature some of Sol’s fabulous work. If you want an art form that will make you feel truly wonderful, try putting a piece of hand blown glass in a ray of sunlight. You just can’t help the happy feeling! So unique, so unusual, so superb.
