Artists - Morgan Saddington
Morgan has always been drawn to silver jewellery by the appearance and versatility of the metal. Having grown up with two very artistic parents, she has been surrounded by various art forms her entire life. Morgan has enjoyed photography, sculpture, painting and print making. She has completed the Visual Arts diploma program at Camosun College and has earned a living teaching dance to children, teens and adults.
After taking basic silversmithing courses and through several years of experimentation, Morgan discovered chain making and fell in love with the art form. The ability to create something with such movement and fluidity from a solid material is what she finds so appealing. Inspired by chain-maille and armor patterns of past times, Morgan has created her own designs and patterns. Sometimes, Morgan includes a small glass or stone bead or an original hand made silver embellishment to accent her pieces.
Morgan lives and creates her unique jewellery in the beautiful Cowichan Station area, south of Duncan on Vancouver Island. Her work has been chosen for exhibition at the prestigious, juried Sooke Fine Art Show and the juried Sidney Fine Art Show, both in 2007 and 2008. Morgan participates in both the Stinking Fish Studio Tour and the Visions Studio Tour.
The Process:
All of the silver chains are hand made from start to finish. Different gauges of silver wire are coiled, cut and assembled, link by link, into various chains, in various patterns, most of which are traditional chain-maille designs. The end rings and hooks are hand forged. The completed chain or piece is then tumble polished to bring out the brilliant silver shine. Morgan uses sterling silver which is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metal, usually copper. As with other silver jewellery, some tarnishing is natural over time with exposure to air. Quails’ Nest Studio always includes a re-sealable pouch to protect your piece from being scratched or tarnished while it is not in use.
